Teach Mach names and specialist terms
Use the custom dictionary to preserve the exact spelling of words that matter to you.
macOSUpdated July 25, 2026
What the dictionary does
The custom dictionary gives the Refined cleanup step a trusted spelling reference. When the transcript contains a matching or similar-sounding term, Mach can use the form you supplied.
Dictionary terms guide final spelling. They do not retrain the speech-recognition model, and Raw mode does not apply AI dictionary cleanup.
Add a term
- 1Open Mach from the menu bar and choose Dictation Settings.
- 2Open Dictionary.
- 3Enter the term exactly as it should appear.
- 4Choose Add. The term applies to future Refined dictations.
Useful examples
- People and companies
- Swapnil Gupta, Mach, OpenAI
- Products and technologies
- Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, Cloudflare
- Capitalization
- iPhone, macOS, YouTube
- Abbreviations
- gRPC, API, WER
Keep it focused
- Add only terms that are repeatedly misspelled or unusually formatted.
- Store the canonical spelling rather than a phonetic approximation.
- Remove outdated or conflicting variants.
- Test the term in a short Refined dictation after adding it.
If a term is still wrong
Check that Refined mode is selected and that the dictionary contains exactly one preferred spelling. If recognition is consistently far from the intended word, clearer pronunciation or a better microphone may help more than another dictionary entry.
