Using Mach
Choose Raw or Refined output
Use Raw for a close transcript or Refined for clean, app-aware writing.
macOSUpdated July 25, 2026
Choose the right mode
- Raw, shown as Pure STT (verbatim) in the current Mac app, returns the speech-to-text transcript without AI cleanup.
- Refined removes filler, repairs punctuation and grammar, and formats the result for the app you are using.
- Refined also applies tone, custom dictionary, language-preservation, and romanization preferences.
Change the mode
- 1Open Mach from the menu bar.
- 2Choose Dictation Settings.
- 3Under Mode, select Refined or Pure STT (verbatim).
- 4Your choice applies to the next dictation.
What Refined does not do
Refined is still dictation, not an assistant command. It should clean and present the words you supplied without answering questions, inventing details, or translating your speech into one language.
A simple rule
Choose Raw when exact wording matters most. Choose Refined for messages, email, notes, and other writing that should be ready to paste.
